One in 10 cars sold in April has been electrified

The hybrids continue to carry the baton while the phev are the ones that grew the most in the month

Stagnation remains. During the month of April, registrations of cars and SUVs registered a decline of 12.1% compared to the same month of 2021, which implies having sold 69,111 units. In the accumulated of the year, the 233,509 units that have been sold represent a fall of 11.8% compared to the same period of the previous year. However, as has been happening in recent months there is a way to see the glass half full instead of half empty: to look at electrified vehicles.

During the fourth month of the year this type of vehicles managed to grow by no less than 35.4% compared to 2021, which implies having sold 6,608 units. Amount that represents 8% of the market in that month while in the accumulated of the year the 25,706 units represent one in 10 sales in our country. On the other hand, registrations of electrified, hybrid and gas vehicles (passenger cars, quadricycles, commercial and industrial vehicles and buses) increased their sales in April by 8.9% compared to the same month of the previous year, to 27,702 units delivered. In the accumulated of the year, the deliveries of these vehicles grew by 17.7% to 97,776 units.

Thanks to these data, this type of vehicle is positioned as the second most demanded option thanks to the 34.3% share registered during the month of April, 3.5 points less than gasoline (37.8%) and 6.5 points more than diesel (27.8%). In numbers, those 27,702 units have remained only 2,837 registrations of gasoline models while they have exceeded by 5,266 units those of diesel. In this way, the average CO2 emissions of passenger cars sold in the month of April remain at 121.8 g / km traveled, 4.4% lower than the average emissions of new cars sold in April 2021.

Electrics continue to rise

Going by categories were the plug-in hybrids the models that grew the most during the month of April with no less than 42.6% compared to 2021 which implies having added 4,391 sales. In the accumulated already touch the 15,000 which also implies the growth of 46.1% compared to the same period last year. Its total share stands at 5.37%. After them, pure electric vehicles stood with an improvement of 23% during the month of April by selling 2,217 units while in the accumulated they are already at 10,747 units, which represents a growth of 84.7% compared to the previous year at this point, already representing 3.86% of the total market. If we focus on passenger cars, this segment increases its share by 33.2%, to 1,925 units.

Now, the weight of the electrified in our country is still for hybrids and is that despite growing only 4.9% during April (19,604 units registered) in the accumulated of the year they already reach 67,171 units, 10.3% more than in 2021 representing a total share of 24.13%, that is, one in four models sold in Spain is a hybrid.

Room for improvement

In any case, although the market has a positive and upward trend, ANFAC warns that in order to achieve the goal of a park of 3 million electrified cars by 2030 marked in the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan, the current pace is insufficient. In the first four months, 23,957 electrified passenger cars (BEV + PHEV) have been registered, if this pace is maintained, the year would close with about 72,000 units sold, far from the 120,000 units marked as a milestone in 2022 to reach the goal set by the PNIEC in 2030.

José López-Tafall, general director of ANFAC, said that “the sector continues to push with a wide range of vehicles, but it is very necessary to generate a context of greater certainty to the user through the promotion of recharging infrastructures, greater efficiency of aid plans and a favorable fiscal framework that makes the electrified vehicle a first purchase option”. For her part, the director of communication of GANVAM, Tania Puche, affirms that “in addition to promoting electrification, much more active and effective scrapping policies are needed, above all, oriented to these older vehicles”.
