Nature on the edge: forests, soils and oceans could lose their capacity to absorb carbon

The main ecosystems of the planet, essential to reduce the gases responsible for global warming, are facing deterioration. The details of two international studies and the word of an expert.
Forests, soils, and oceans are ecosystems that can capture and store carbon dioxide found in Earth’s atmosphere. In other words, they function as natural carbon sinks. However, that capacity today would be limited as a result of activities carried out by groups of human beings, such as deforestation, soil degradation and the emission of greenhouse gases that favor global warming. Scientists from the United Kingdom, China, Germany and France released a preliminary report that is a wake-up call for the future because they fear that crucial processes in carbon sinks will crumble, and that could accelerate the impacts of current climate change. Last year was the hottest ever recorded, and the study noted that the amount of carbon absorbed by the Earth temporarily plummeted.
