LNG regains prominence as a marine fuel

However, despite the advantages, its economic viability remains in doubt

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is experiencing a resurgence as a fuel in the maritime sector, according to Gibson’s latest Tanker Market Report.
Despite losing ground in recent years to alternatives such as methanol and ammonia, several players, including Maersk, announced plans to place large orders for dual-fuel vessels that use LNG.

The report notes that LNG could consolidate itself as the dominant alternative fuel in the maritime realm due to the growth of the fleet of LNG-powered vessels and the expansion of bunkering infrastructure.
In Singapore, for example, LNG bunker sales reached 212,000 tonnes in the first half of 2024, quadrupling the figures for the same period in 2023.
This increase reflects the growing popularity of dual-fuel vessels, as well as greater stability in LNG prices, which are currently close to parity with MGO (Marine Gas Oil).
