Spanish companies increase their emissions in 2025 pushed by Trump and the blackout

The emissions of the main Spanish companies increased by 2.1% in 2025 compared to the previous year due to the push of the policies of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, and the reinforced backup mechanism that Red Eléctrica put in place after the blackout on April 28, with Repsol, Endesa and Naturgy as the most polluting.

According to a report published on Thursday by the Sustainability Observatory (OS), Spain “is not decarbonising” as planned, after the emissions of the main Spanish companies grew by almost two million tonnes of CO2 equivalent to 92 million. Spain “is not decarbonising despite many grandiloquent statements”, said the coordinator of the OS, Fernando Prieto, who has called for reversing the reinforced support system. All this in a year that marked “historical records of temperatures of extreme weather phenomena such as heat waves, forest fires with 400,000 hectares affected and numerous floods and storms affecting practically the entire national territory”, as the observatory recalls in a press release. By sector, the burning of oil and gas fuels continues to be the most polluting with 37%, followed by refineries (14%), cement (12%) and the airline sector (10%). Compared to the previous year, only two sectors increased their emissions compared to the previous year: the burning of oil and gas fuels (10%) and the ceramics sector (2%) due to the reinforced backup system that Red Eléctrica established after the major blackout on 28 April and which has led to “a large increase in the use of gas for electricity production”.

This system “is causing the discharge of energy, without producing or using, of at least 20% of photovoltaic and 12% of wind,” according to the coordinator of the OS, Fernando Prieto.
