The EU will not give in to pressure to reduce CO2 emissions

The European Commission is not considering changing EU policies to reduce CO₂ emissions from cars, despite pressure from the EU’s largest political group to weaken the laws, the bloc’s climate policy chief told Reuters on Thursday.

The center-right European People’s Party (EPP), the largest legislative group in the European Parliament, launched a campaign to weaken climate rules this week by joining pressure on Brussels from car manufacturers and national governments to urgently help Europe’s ailing auto sector.

Asked if he was considering changing the rules on CO₂ emissions from cars, the European Union’s climate commissioner, Wopke Hoekstra, replied that he was not.
