EU sets_CO2 emission limits for cars in 2025 and 2035

The European Union will implement the ‘CAFE’ regulation to reduce CO₂ emissions in vehicles, facing significant fines and challenges for manufacturers.

The European Union is implementing the ‘CAFE’ (Corporate Average Fuel Emissions) regulation, which will require car manufacturers to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to a limit of 93.6 grams per kilometre from 2025. This limit is expected to become even stricter, reaching 49.5 grams of CO₂ per kilometre by 2035, coinciding with the de facto ban on sales of internal combustion vehicles. The regulations include penalties that could amount to up to 95 euros for each gram of CO₂ that exceeds the established limit, which could potentially mean multimillion-dollar fines for those brands that fail to meet the goals of ‘zero emissions’ vehicles.
