The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is stagnating in Spain and complicates its climate objective

A study by BC3 suggests that the gases expelled in 2025 will be almost the same as in 2024. The authors call for transforming the transport sector and electrifying the economy
Spain has stopped the pace of reduction in its greenhouse gas emissions, which are behind global warming that shoots up thermometers and makes extreme weather events harsher. According to calculations by the Energy Transition and Climate Action Observatory (OTEA) of the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), 2025 will close with practically the same gross emissions as in 2024. The estimates of these experts, who monitor the country’s main sectors of activity, suggest that this year gases will fall by just 0.2% compared to 2024, when the reduction trend had already slowed. In other words, “emissions would remain at levels similar to those of 2023,” the authors detail in their report.
