The climate summit closes without being able to mention the abandonment of fossil fuels again

COP30 approves a final declaration without direct allusions to leaving behind oil, gas and coal, the main culprits of warming

The UN climate summit held in the Brazilian city of Belém has not managed to directly promote the progressive abandonment of the main causes of the crisis that is hitting the planet and humanity. The mere fact of mentioning fossil fuels – oil, gas and coal – has been impossible in the final text of this summit, which has been agreed more than a day late by the nearly 200 countries that meet in this type of conference and that must approve everything by consensus. Nor has the call to promote a roadmap for this transition been included in that final declaration, the objective that the Brazilian government had set for itself for the Belém conference, COP30. The countries have agreed to triple the funds they allocate for adaptation to the impacts of climate change by 2035 and to establish a “dialogue” on global trade, following China’s criticism of the carbon dioxide tax launched by the European Union. But the great battle has been that of fossil fuels. Although science has been categorical for many years about the responsibility of these fuels in the emission of greenhouse gases that are overheating the Earth, in the summits that have been held for more than three decades to address this tremendous challenge it is impossible for them to be mentioned directly in the final texts.
