UN Environment Assembly Kicks Off in Kenya in Search of Sustainable Solutions

The 7th UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-7), the world’s main environmental decision-making body, began on Monday in Nairobi in order to promote “sustainable solutions” to the planet’s environmental crises. UNEA-7, which will run until Friday in the Kenyan capital, comes after last month’s COP30 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Belém, Brazil, where a final document was approved that did not mention fossil fuels, the main source of global warming, and cooled the most ambitious aspirations of dozens of countries. “UNEA was created to express global environmental awareness and to be a benchmark for the protection of our planet,” Abdullah Bin Ali Al-Amri, president of the Oman Environmental Authority, the country that holds the rotating presidency of the Assembly, said at the opening plenary of the meeting.

“This spirit of consensus will be the example of our current efforts. Therefore, let us cooperate to serve our planet,” the president stressed at the UN complex in Nairobi, which hosts the forum under the slogan “Promoting sustainable solutions for a resilient planet”. The executive director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Inger Andersen, said in plenary that the Assembly has a “track record of success”, but “must go deeper than ever, as environmental challenges are accelerating the increase in the average temperature” of the Earth. “This Assembly must be inspired by its history of unity and, once again, offer sustainable solutions” for the planet, which is facing the so-called “triple crisis”: the climate change crisis, the biodiversity loss crisis and the pollution and waste crisis, stressed the head of UNEP, headquartered in Nairobi.
