Is it safe to store millions of tons of_CO2 underground?

The benefits of CO₂ capture and storage to maintain a habitable climate undoubtedly outweigh the risks of leakage, which are negligible if appropriate measures are taken to select, characterize, monitor and manage storage projects.

We are in a state of climate emergency caused by human activities. The emission into the atmosphere of large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) has led to a warming of the Earth’s surface of about 1.2 °C on average above the pre-industrial level. The impacts of global warming have already manifested themselves in more intense and frequent extreme weather events.
