India criticises ‘irrational’ EU conditions for free trade agreement

India’s Minister of Trade and Industry, Piyush Goyal, on Friday made several criticisms of “irrational” impositions in negotiations with the European Union (EU) for a free trade agreement, stalled for several years without the expected progress.

“For five or six years we have been discussing irrational tariffs, totally contrary to the MFN (most favored nation) laws of the WTO (World Trade Organization) (…) Which are against the rules that we all agreed to respect,” Goyal said at the launch of the Federation of European Companies in India (FEBI), the EU’s official business chamber.
