The Council and the European Parliament had already reached an agreement to approve the Emissions Regulation for heavy-duty vehicles – which seeks to reduce emissions by 90% compared to 2019 – but Berlin had threatened a last-minute veto if efuels were not included.
The European Commission will study the feasibility of synthetic fuels (efuels) as a way of decarbonising heavy-duty vehicles. This is the clause that Germany has forced to include in the draft Emissions Regulations for Heavy Duty Vehicles, which seeks to reduce emissions by 90% compared to 2019.
