Europe paves the way for emissions taxes to decarbonise the LNG industry

LNG vessels arriving in Europe will be subject to a carbon tax for their fuel emissions

The LNG industry has no illusions about the scale of its carbon challenge. LNG projects are among the world’s most emissions-intensive energy assets and are facing increasing pressure to decarbonize. And it won’t be cheap, because as analysts at Wood Mackenzie say, “all the options available to reduce emissions increase the cost of the LNG supplied. And after two years of chaos in the gas market, few buyers are willing to pay a premium for lower-emission LNG.”
