Eurelectric sees the electrification of up to 90% of industrial energy demand as viable

The large European electricity employers’ association (Eurelectric) has today released a statement in which it expresses its unequivocal support for the European Union’s emissions trading system, the revision of which, as of today, will be the subject of negotiation in the European Parliament. Eurelectric advocates the preservation of a “robust carbon market”, which boosts investment in renewables, and recalls that (1) 75% of the CO₂ emissions of the industrial sector come from the generation of heat (by burning fossil fuels) for industrial processes; that (2) up to 90% of the energy demand of industry can be met with renewable electricity; and that (3) the import of fossil fuels costs the EU more than 450,000 million euros per year.
