Spain will defend in the EU to maintain the decarbonisation roadmap towards net zero emissions by 2050

The Secretary of State for the Environment, Hugo Morán, announces that Spain will defend at the Council of Ministers of the Environment of the EU, scheduled for November 4, the need to keep intact the European roadmap towards climate neutrality by 2050. This objective, set out in the European Green Deal and the European Climate Law, includes intermediate milestones for 2035 and 2040, essential to ensure a coherent and effective transition. Morán stresses that any setback in this planning would be a direct detriment to the member states themselves: “If we move from that roadmap, the first ones who are going to lose are us,” he said during the opening of the “Horizon COP30. Global boost to the green, circular and competitive economy”, organised by Ecoembes. The meeting is particularly relevant because the next Council will be the EU’s last chance to agree on a 2040 emissions reduction target and thus be able to present the 2035 target before the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), which will be held in Belém (Brazil) from 10 to 21 November. following the Leaders’ Summit on the 6th and 7th.
