Ahead of COP30, FAO increases support to countries on NDCs

Ahead of COP30 in Brazil, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is accelerating its support to countries in the development and implementation of climate action plans that have low-emission and resilient agriculture and food systems at their core. More and more countries are asking for support for their agrifood systems as they update their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), but less than half are receiving the help they need, help that FAO is in a position to provide. These were the key messages conveyed by FAO representatives at a meeting of the NDC Association’s Select Committee in Copenhagen this week. The Deputy Director of the Office of Climate Change, Biodiversity and Environment (OCB), Piedad Martín, and the Global Coordinator of the SCALA Programme, Julia Wolf, are attending the meeting, the first to be held since FAO joined the Select Committee earlier this year. They say that the inclusion of FAO as a key implementing partner in the Alliance’s new 2026-2030 Work Programme would go a long way towards meeting the growing demand for aid. “FAO stands ready to support the NDC Partnership in closing this critical gap through its extensive network of internal and external expertise in the sector and convening power among leading governmental and non-state NDC practitioners,” Martin stresses. “The recently expanded and funded by the German Ministry of the Environment (BMUV) through the International Climate Initiative, the FAO-UNDP SCALA flagship programme is a proven vehicle for providing support to NDCs. As countries strive to submit their next-generation NDCs in 2025, FAO is doubling down on its efforts, including through a specific project funded by Germany’s Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).”
