The European Commission sent a reasoned opinion on Wednesday (second step in the infringement procedure) to twelve European Union countries, including Spain, for failing to transpose the new rules of the EU’s CO2 emissions trading system, the so-called ETS, into their national legislation in time.
“The Commission urges Member States to accelerate the transposition of the agreed rules to strengthen and expand EU emissions trading,” the EU executive transferred to Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechia, Estonia, Spain, Latvia, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia and Finland.
Brussels has sent each of these countries a reasoned opinion for not having transposed or only partially transposed into national law the Directive on the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), whose transposition deadline expired on 31 December 2023.
