40% of glaciers are “doomed” to disappear even if climate change stops: “It’s much worse than what you see”

International researchers confirm that “every fraction of a degree counts” and implies a more unstable climate, greater environmental degradation and an increasing impact on human life

Climate change is already having consequences.

On May 28 of this year, the massive collapse of a glacier in southern Switzerland partially destroyed the village of Blatten which, fortunately, had been completely evacuated a week earlier. In September 2023, a glacial collapse in Greenland triggered a succession of events and eventually triggered a tsunami with waves of 200 meters and generated a seismic signal that lasted for nine days.

Last year, the temperature threshold was exceeded for the first time

There was talk, at the time, of a point of no return that would be reached, if the trend of emissions and global warming continued, between 2030 and 2035. From then on there would be nothing to do. In 2024, an average temperature on the planet 1.5ºC higher than the pre-industrial temperature was reached for the first time, despite the fact that the Paris Agreement established precisely that 1.5ºC as a crucial limit to avoid extreme weather events and the loss of biodiversity.
