COP29: Methane Emissions Agreements Advance

In the run-up to the COP29 meeting to be held next November in Azerbaijan, the International Energy Agency is rushing consensus to cut fossil fuel pollution.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) and the COP29 Presidency convened world leaders in New York on Tuesday to discuss how governments and industries can meet their pledges to reduce methane emissions in the energy sector. Around 100 people, including ministers, senior executives and heads of international organisations, attended the event. This took place during the UN General Assembly and Climate Week in New York. The talks were chaired by Fatih Birol, IEA Executive Director, and Mukhtar Babayev, COP29 President-elect. They highlighted the action plans that countries and companies are developing to reduce methane emissions from fossil fuels. In addition, how financial institutions and regional collaboration can support these commitments were discussed.
