Commissioner Hoekstra warns that the fight against climate will need more public and private money

In an interview with EFE in Madrid on his first official day as European commissioner, he distances himself from the criticism he has received for his past work in the oil sector, underlines his commitment to climate action and anticipates that this “global problem” needs “more responsibility on the part of everyone”. “The reality is that climate action across the globe is going to ask for a significant amount of public money and private money, not just in the next two or three years, but in the next few decades, and there are no solutions and no easy way out for any of us, this will have costs and, if you look at the impacts in Slovenia, Spain or Greece, you immediately realize that this is going to get more expensive,” he says. For this reason, he considers that “there is going to be an obligation” of all countries – “including European countries” – to help “everyone”.
