Brussels finances the LIFE URBAN KLIMA 2050 project in Euskadi against climate change with 10.3 million

The European Commission announced on Monday that it will invest 10.3 million euros from the Environment and Climate Action programme to finance part of the LIFE Urban Klima 2050 project, the Basque Country’s strategy with actions to adapt to climate change.

The project was presented at the beginning of December by the Basque Government and through it a consortium made up of 20 entities will undertake a total of 40 actions in coastal areas, river basins and urban areas until 2025. The total investment will reach 19.8 million euros.

Brussels has indicated that the Basque Country will be “severely” affected by climate change and the KLIMA 2050 strategy aims to “radically” improve the region’s resilience to climate change.

The LIFE URBAN KLIMA 2050 project, highlighted Brussels, will help implement this strategy, promoting its integration into territorial planning and other areas such as health, water management and energy.

The European Commission has also stressed that the project will increase the commitment of Basque society in adapting to climate change by ensuring that 70% of the local population commits to changing their habits to support climate action.

Specifically, the EU Executive has announced a total investment of 101.2 million euros under its LIFE environment and climate programme for 20 “large-scale” projects in nine Member States: Cyprus, Estonia, France, Greece, Ireland, Latvia, Slovakia, czech republic and Spain.
