Brussels finalises a review to make the emissions trading system more flexible without cutting targets

The European Commission (EC) has announced that “in the coming days” proposals will arrive as part of the review of the emissions trading system in which it is working to make it “more modern, flexible and fit for purpose”, without lowering the Union’s climate ambition.

“We want to strengthen it, make it more modern and fit for purpose,” said the European Commission’s Energy spokeswoman, Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, stressing that the government is exploring different options to “find the best balance”.
Brussels says that this system “has played a very important role” in reducing the use of fossil fuels in the EU and advancing the energy transition, but believes that now “the time has come to review it”.
