EU law limiting the destruction of unsold garments comes into force

Every year, between 4% and 9% of unsold textile products are destroyed before they are used, a practice responsible for 5.6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

As of this Sunday, large textile companies will no longer be able to destroy surplus unsold clothing and footwear, a measure with which the European Union (EU) seeks to promote the circular economy, although the reuse sector warns that the real challenge remains to curb overproduction, EFE publishes. The ban is part of the European Regulation on Ecodesign for Sustainable Products (ESPR), in force since July 2024, which aims to improve the durability, repairability and recyclability of products marketed in the EU. In addition to preventing the destruction of textile products, it obliges large companies to report on the volume of unsold products they discard and the destination they receive, while medium-sized companies will have a transitional period until 2030.
