Germany pressures EU to ease CO₂ standards in automotive

Germany reopens the debate on the Old Continent by calling for greater flexibility in CO₂ emission targets for the automotive industry.

The regulation of carbon dioxide emissions in the European Union returns to the center of the political and industrial debate after a few months in a latent state since the focus seemed to be on other areas. Germany, the continent’s largest automotive power, has formally requested greater flexibility in EU CO₂ regulations, in a move that reflects the growing tensions between climate objectives and the industrial reality of the sector.

The German government believes that the current targets, designed to accelerate the decarbonisation of transport, could have adverse effects if they are not adjusted to the current economic and technological circumstances. The request does not imply an abandonment of the climate goals, but a review of the deadlines and mechanisms to achieve them.
