On November 1, 2027, a first reactor in Almaraz would have to stop operating, while the second would have to close on October 31, 2028.
MEPs on the European Parliament’s mission to the Almaraz nuclear power plant last February recommended on Tuesday to reverse the plan to close the plant and warned of the demographic and economic risks of industrial closures in European regions with less economic development, such as Extremadura. This is the initial draft of the report of this mission, which will be presented for the first time this Wednesday to the rest of the members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Petitions and which may still receive amendments before being approved, although it is not binding. In the recommendations, the MEPs call for “the closure of the Almaraz plant to be reversed to guarantee the stability of the grid” and require the Spanish government “a transparent impact assessment”, as well as to maintain “an effective dialogue” with all parties involved on decisions on “large energy infrastructures that have important socio-economic consequences at the regional level”. as is the case of Almaraz. MEPs point out that the European Union’s green taxonomy recognises nuclear energy as a “transitional” activity to mitigate the effects of climate change and warn that any industrial closure in a region like Extremadura entails “demographic and economic risks”.
