The World Nuclear Association assures that the European sector is not dependent on Russia

The director general of the World Nuclear Association (WNA), the Spanish Sama Bilbao y León, denied on Tuesday that the European sector has a critical dependence on Russia and regretted that Spain has disdained the atom for years just because “it was fashionable”.

The executive heads a London-based industrial organisation that has members from 44 different countries, including the Russian giant Rosatom, which is the subject of debate in the European Union (EU) for being one of the few strategic companies that has not been subject to direct sanctions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The nuclear engineer acknowledged that the point where there was more dependence on Russia was not so much uranium enrichment, but a type of fuel for Soviet-designed reactors (VVER) for which “there were very few manufacturers”.
“For us it is very important to ensure that all our members are in contact and to know what each one does and how they do it,” he added.
The Spanish engineer criticised the fact that Europe and North America got rid of the enrichment and conversion capabilities in which they were pioneers.
