The EU definitively approves the target of cutting_CO2 emissions by 90% by 2040

The Council of the EU on Thursday definitively approved that the European Union will mandatorily cut its CO2 emissions by 90% in 2040 compared to 1990, allowing countries that can cover up to 5% of the target to buy emission credits from third countries outside the European Union.

“The European Union remains committed to leading the global fight against climate change while protecting our competitiveness and ensuring that no one is left behind,” said the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment of the Republic of Cyprus, Maria Panayiotou, in a statement on behalf of the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU.
