European transport ministers have reached an agreement to amend the Euro vignette directive, which regulates tolls for lorries in the EU, and which must now be negotiated with the European Parliament.
The Council of European Transport Ministers has given the green light at its meeting this week to the start of negotiations within the EU institutions to amend the European vignette Directive, which establishes the rules on tolls and use charges for heavy vehicles. As reported by the institution, these proposed changes focus on improving the legal clarity of the Directive, simplifying its structure and ensuring the consistent application of CO2-based charging rules. The European transport ministers believe that this common position clarifies some key provisions of the Euro vignette directive, especially considering that the new CO2 emission standards for heavy-duty vehicles will affect the directive from 1 July 2026.
