Brussels sets criteria to certifyCO2 removals and curb ‘eco-posturing’

The system will be applied voluntarily, so that promoters will not be obliged to apply for certification
The European Commission (EC) has approved the first methodologies to certify projects that permanently remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere, with the aim of establishing common standards for this type of activity and defining clear criteria to verify their real impact and thus avoid ‘eco-posturing’ practices.
The system will be voluntary, so promoters will not be obliged to apply for certification, although they will be able to do so if they want their initiatives to be officially recognised under common EU rules.
As explained by the EU executive, the methodologies adopted are applied to three types of activities considered as permanent carbon removals, such as the direct capture of CO2 from the air with storage or the use of biochar (biochar) to sequester carbon in the long term.
