The European Parliament today approved that the European Union will cut its CO2 emissions by 90% by 2040 compared to 1990, allowing countries that can cover up to 5% of the target by buying emission credits from third countries outside the EU.
With 413 votes in favour, 226 against and 12 abstentions, the European Parliament backed the legally binding target negotiated with the European Commission and EU countries, which will be official when formally adopted by the Council of the EU.
The European Climate Law states that the EU must cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 and continue the effort to achieve climate neutrality by mid-century.
The revision ratified on Tuesday sets the intermediate target for 2040 and allows international credits to be used from 2036 to cover up to five points of that reduction.
