EU agrees to cut emissions by 90% by 2040 and accelerate transition

The European Union has reached a political agreement to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040, compared to 1990 levels. The pact is a decisive step in the EU’s climate roadmap and seeks to accelerate the transition to a carbon-neutral economy, while strengthening the bloc’s industrial competitiveness and social cohesion. The intermediate target for 2040 falls between the already binding target of cutting emissions by at least 55% by 2030 and the commitment to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. According to the European institutions, this 90% reduction is necessary to comply with international climate agreements and limit the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The Council of the European Union (the countries) and the European Parliament reached a political agreement on Wednesday to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040 compared to 1990, a binding intermediate target to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
