The European Union defends its carbon tax at COP30

The time has come to impose a price on carbon broadly, the European Union defended this Monday, November 17, at COP30 in Belém, Brazil. This claim is an implicit response to attacks by China and other countries on their carbon tax at borders.

One of the EU’s environmental measures, known as a “carbon tax” on imports, is one of the sticking points at the UN climate talks in Brazil. “It is something that we must pursue. Carbon pricing is something that we need to pursue with as many countries as possible and as soon as possible,” Wopke Hoekstra, European Commissioner for Climate, told the meeting. China, India and other allied countries want COP30 to take a decision against unilateral trade barriers, referring to the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
