Guterres calls for a “balanced” agreement to unblock the negotiation at COP30

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said Thursday at the COP30 climate conference in the Brazilian Amazonian city of Belém that the way to unblock the summit negotiations is an agreement that “balances” demands on financing and those on the end of fossil fuels. Guterres said – at a press conference – that he believes that an agreement is still “possible” and that it is still too early to talk about “failure”, despite the lack of progress in negotiations on the most controversial issues.

“It is possible to reach an agreement whereby developed countries agree to engage in this goal (of increasing finance) and, at the same time, their concerns about mitigation (emission reductions) are addressed,” he said.
