Melting Arctic ice opens up new sea routes: experts warn of environmental and climate impacts

The trend in the Arctic is alarming. Melting sea ice caused by global warming allowed maritime traffic to increase by 25% between 2013 and 2019. As sea ice melts, new sea routes between continents are opening up and the time to navigate these waters during the year is extended. This is causing the change of the world’s sea routes, but also the deterioration of an extremely fragile environment such as the Arctic.

The consequences of Arctic warming

It’s a fact that the Arctic is warming, and according to multiple scientific studies, since 1979 it has done so four times faster than anywhere else on the planet. As the sea ice warms, it melts and opens up avenues for more maritime traffic.
