Germany formally complies with emissions budget until 2030, but not beyond

Germany formally met the climate targets for 2024 in the face of lower energy consumption due to cyclical weakness and a benevolent winter, and the same can be expected with the emissions budget until 2030, thanks to the cushion created by lower economic activity during the pandemic, although the country is far from reaching climate neutrality in 2045. This is the conclusion of the expert council on climate issues in its report presented on Thursday in which they evaluate the data published by the Federal Environment Agency presented in mid-March.
This independent guild, made up of five experts, confirmed official calculations, according to which greenhouse gas emissions amounted to around 649 megatonnes of CO₂ equivalent in 2024, 3.4% or 23 megatonnes less than the previous year, although a significantly smaller decrease than that recorded in 2023, when they fell by 77 megatonnes compared to 2022. The energy sector contributed the most to reducing emissions, reducing them by 17.6 megatonnes, while the decreases were smaller in the buildings sector (2.4 megatonnes less), transport (2.1 megatonnes), agriculture (800,000 tonnes) and waste management (100,000 tonnes).
