Brussels gives more leeway to the car: The 27 support extending the deadline to meet theCO2 targets until 2027

The Council of the EU agrees to make the emissions reduction schedule more flexible for car manufacturers, which will now have three years to reach the joint targets without annual sanctions.
The countries of the European Union have unchanged the European Commission’s proposal to extend until 2027 the deadline that car manufacturers will have to meet their annual CO₂ emission reduction targets. With this, they seek to give more leeway to the sector and avoid millionaire fines for specific non-compliance. The decision, which was endorsed on Wednesday by the Twenty-Seven, represents a shift in the EU’s climate strategy with regard to the automotive sector. Until now, compliance with carbon dioxide (CO₂) emission reduction targets was assessed on an annual basis. With the new amendment, manufacturers will be able to compensate for the years in which they do not reach the target if they achieve it in others within the same three-year period (2025-2027).
