The UN warns that emissions from construction continue to grow and move away from Paris

The buildings and construction sector remains “far off” from the commitments of the Paris Agreement and CO₂ emissions have grown by 5.4% since 2015, warns a UN report, which calls for improving energy efficiency, accelerating renewables and doubling financing.

The report on the ‘State of the World’s Buildings and Construction’, published on Monday by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC), points out that the sector consumes 32% of the world’s energy and accounts for 34% of CO₂ emissions. While policies have been proven to work, they need to be implemented “faster, on a larger scale,” as there is “insufficient progress” to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement signed in 2015.
