The European Union selects seven projects from Spain to extract critical minerals

The European Union wants to extract critical minerals again so as not to depend on powers such as China. Lithium, copper, nickel, cobalt… All of them are essential for manufacturing car or mobile phone batteries and in the defence industry. For this reason, Brussels is going to promote a total of 47 projects, seven of them in Spain, specifically in mines in Extremadura, Galicia, Andalusia and Castilla-La Mancha.

The list drawn up by Brussels includes mining projects in 13 member states of the bloc, with which it covers 14 critical materials of the 17 that it set as priorities in its directive. Of the total number of projects identified, 22 initiatives focus on lithium, 12 on nickel, 11 on graphite, with another 10 related to cobalt and 7 on manganese, key elements for the automotive industry and electric batteries. At a press conference from the EU capital, the European Commission’s Vice-President for Industrial Strategy, Stéphane Sejourne, argued that without critical raw materials “there can be no decarbonisation”.
