Key week in the EU to save Von der Leyen’s grand coalition

The coalition of pro-European political families that has supported the European Union for decades is facing one of the most delicate weeks in its history, with the rupture of bridges between the PP and social democrats on account of the approval of the new European Commission, including the position of the Spanish Teresa Ribera. What happens in the next five days in Brussels will be key to determining whether the European Parliament can hold the vote on Wednesday 27 to approve the new executive as a whole so that it can begin its mandate on December 1 and, from a broader perspective, for the survival of the coalition. Although the relationship between the PP and the Socialists has been blown up this week, tension had been building since September, when the European People’s Party first used its alternative majority with the extreme right of the Conservatives and Reformists, the Patriots for Europe and the Europe of Sovereign Nations to push through a resolution on Venezuela.
