The price for each tonne of CO₂ emitted in the EU will continue to rise until the end of the decade, but additional revenues from capitals will be offset by lower revenues as fossil fuel use falls and greater fiscal flexibility will be needed to facilitate the necessary investments in climate and green technologies.
That is the main conclusion of a study published on Monday by the think tank Agora Energiewende, which argues that if the EU undertakes the necessary investments to cut its CO₂ emissions by 90% by 2040 compared to 1990, the European economy could grow at a rate of around 2% per year.
