U.N. Court to Begin Dec. 2 Public Hearings on Climate Change Case

What are the legal consequences for governments whose inaction has significantly damaged the climate and environment?

The U.N.’s top court announced that public hearings will begin Dec. 2 in a landmark case seeking a nonbinding advisory opinion on “states’ obligations with respect to climate change.”

The U.N. General Assembly sent the case to the International Court of Justice last year, with Secretary-General António Guterres saying at the time that he hoped the opinion would encourage nations “to take bolder and stronger climate action that our world desperately needs.”
