Parliament re-elects von der Leyen as President of the European Commission

With 401 votes in favor, the European Parliament elected Ursula von der Leyen as president of the European Commission in a secret ballot on July 18.

This will be Ursula von der Leyen’s second term as President of the Commission. She was first elected by MEPs in July 2019.

To be elected, von der Leyen needed the support of 360 MEPs (an absolute majority of the 719-member House). 707 MEPs participated in the secret ballot vote, of which 401 voted in favour, 284 against and 15 abstained (there were also seven invalid votes).
