Clean energy generated a record 44% of China’s electricity in May 2024, pushing coal’s share to an all-time low of 53%, despite continued demand growth. The new Carbon Brief analysis, based on official figures and other data that was not available until last week, reveals the true magnitude of the fall in coal’s share of the energy mix. Coal has lost seven percentage points compared to May 2023, when it accounted for 60% of generation in China.
