The EU wants large ships to reduce their emissions by up to 80% by 2050

The large-scale shipping sector operating in the EU will need to gradually reduce its net greenhouse gas emissions from 2% in 2025 to 80% in 2050.

The plenary session of the European Parliament approved on Tuesday new rules on sustainable marine fuels by 555 votes in favor, 48 against and 25 abstentions. Once the European Council gives its final approval, the regulation will be published in the Official Journal of the EU and will apply from 1 January 2025.
