Analysis of CO 2 emissions data in Spain. Entities subject to the European Directive 2003/87/CE. Period 2009 and European Context

This work constitutes the second document of analysis of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions that Spanish companies, within the framework of the Kyoto Protocol and affected by the European Emission Rights Trading Directive, have accounted for according to the second National Allocation Plan (PNA-II) and the latest information on emissions carried out published by the National Registry of Emission Rights (RENADE) referring to the data for the year 2009.

It also contains two contextual summary chapters, the first referring to the European data onCO2 emissions affected by the directive, both from the sectoral perspective and by country, and the second referring to general Spanish data (GDP and population) in relation to the total Spanish emissions published to date (2008 last year published). In the first case, the data has been prepared from the information published in Eurostat and in the European Environment Agency, and in the second case, the information has been extracted from the data of the INE (National Institute of Statistics) and the Ministry of the Environment. and Rural and Marine Environment.

The informative nature of the document has marked the analysis methodology, and in this sense, it has sought to capture in the study of data, those relationships that are easier and more intuitive for the reader, with the aim of facilitating their understanding. In the same way and with the same objective, a data presentation structure has been established that is repeated throughout the document, for each sector and geographical area, this facilitates the comparability and understanding of the data.

All the data that have been used in this work for the preparation of the study are of a public nature. The author’s work has consisted in compiling the data from the different public sources, relating them and capturing the results in this document.

As the reader will be able to verify, the analysis is carried out from top to bottom (top down) from the industrial sectors established in the RENADE reports. The first level corresponds to the data from the Spanish sectoral summary and an aggregate of non-sectoral data by Autonomous Communities (CCAA) is also included. The second level of analysis corresponds to the industrial sectors already grouped for said Autonomous Communities. Finally, the third level is developed from the sectors within the provinces of each CCAA.

Beyond the presentation of the data tables and associated graphs, an explanatory and clarifying text of the information exposed has been introduced in order to facilitate the reader’s understanding. An attempt has been made not to enter into value judgments and capture reality from a totally objective perspective. The data presented is a reflection of facts that are framed and explained in different geographical contexts and that condition the actions of both the affected companies and the public regulatory bodies.
