World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Greenhouse Gas Bulletin

Measurements of the radiocarbon (14C) content in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) provide a unique way to discriminate between fossil fuel combustion and natural sources of CO 2 . The isotopes confirm the dominant role of fossil fuel combustion in increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide levels.

This finding illustrates the importance of long-term measurements of atmospheric composition by laboratories involved in the WMO Watch Program (GAW) to help identify GHG emission sources.
