Advance GHG Emissions in Spain in 2020

According to this analysis by the Energy Transition and Climate Action Observatory, GHG emissions in Spain suffered the largest year-on-year drop in 2020, around 13.6% compared to 2019, placing them 39% below those of 2005 and 6% below 1990. 70% of this reduction would be explained by the effect of the pandemic. Monthly emissions were reduced in all months of the year compared to 2019. The largest reduction coincided with strict confinement, that is, between April (-31%) and May (-22%). December was the month with the lowest year-on-year reduction in emissions (4.3%) as mobility restrictions were relaxed and the economy had a small rebound due to the Christmas holidays.
