Benefits and costs of mitigating methane emissions

According to the report prepared by the UN and the Coalition for Climate and Clean Air, 42% of man-made methane emissions come from agriculture and livestock, 36% from fossil fuel extraction, coal and pipes and 18% of waste dumps. It highlights the possibility of feasible and profitable methane reduction actions of up to 60% in fossil fuel operations and 35% in landfills. Additional measures not specific to methane, such as switching to renewable energy, residential and commercial energy efficiency, and reducing food waste, can reduce methane emissions by a further 15% by 2030. The achievement of the cuts would avoid almost 0.3ºC of global warming in the year 2045.
