Informative note on the Progress of Greenhouse Gas Emissions corresponding to the year 2020

The Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge published in June the Preview of the National Inventory of Greenhouse Gases (GHG), corresponding to the year 2020. This report estimates gross emissions of 271.5 million tons of CO _2e , which represents a global decrease in CO _2e emissions in 2020 compared to the previous year of 13.7%. The level of global emissions stands at -6.4% compared to 1990 and -38.6% compared to 2005. For the first time throughout the series inventoried in the period 1990-2020, emissions decreased with respect to the year 1990. The Government attributes the decrease to two main causes: on the one hand, the increase in electricity generation with renewable sources and the fall in the use of coal; and on the other, to the restrictions on mobility and activity due to the pandemic.
