The emission regulations increase the sale of electric cars by 101% to 5,985 units

A greater offer by brands and European regulations, which require reducing CO emissions₂ per automotive group up to 95 grams per kilometer, are two of the factors that have driven, during the first two months of the year, the sales of electric cars, with a growth of 101% and a total of 5,986 units sold in Spain.

These are the figures released by AEDIVE (Business Association for the Development and Promotion of the Electric Vehicle) and Ganvam (National Association of Sellers of Motor Vehicles, Repair and Spare Parts). Two entities that congratulate themselves on the important reception that electric models are having, despite the fact that the objective for 2020 is to triple last year’s figures and exceed 65,000 units, which requires an increase of 170% at the end of the year.

By type of vehicle, sales in the passenger car segment stand out, with an increase of 120% until February, with a total of 3,209 units, representing around 1.7% of total registrations. Light commercials increased by just 0.9% to 326 units; while in the two-wheeled sector, mopeds grew by 79.3%, with a total of 1,734 units, and motorcycles registered 658 units, which represents an increase of 250% so far this year.

From AEDIVE and Ganvam consider that it is necessary to launch an action plan that allows accelerating the pace of penetration of the electric vehicle in the Spanish car fleet and thus achieve the objective of exceeding 65,000 units sold throughout 2020. This means, from their point of view, a rethinking of aid plans.

These associations consider that at a time when the Government plans to launch a new edition of Moves in which the requirement of mandatory scrapping is under study, “this scrapping should be an incentive, but not a necessary condition, since it is companies and public bodies that buy 48% of electric vehicles, but mostly on a renting basis, so they can’t cancel any car in return.”

According to the executive president of Ganvam, Raúl Palacios, “what is at stake is not to stop access to aid. Those who have an old vehicle to scrap and want to access an electric model, who have a greater amount of incentive than those who do not have this bargaining chip. ”

With the aim of encouraging the deployment of public charging infrastructures that allow accelerating the development of electric mobility and thereby achieving the objectives of zero emission registrations, both associations have pointed out the need to urgently complete the regulated part of the electricity bill, which has pending the development of the charges, for which they consider it necessary that in this development a specific treatment is also given to the charges associated with the electric vehicle.

According to the general director of AEDIVE, Arturo Pérez de Lucia, “we have formally requested the Secretary of State for Energy to take into consideration that together with Circular 3/2020, of January 15, of the National Commission of Markets and Competition, which includes an optional specific toll for supply points dedicated to the recharging of electric vehicles of public access, with less weight than the fixed term, the future Royal Decree of charges contemplates, on a temporary basis, an exemption from charges for the recharging points of public access”.
